From Ideas to Impact

A single ripple spreading across bright shallow water over pale sand

Imagine that you have an incredible idea and, after weeks of preparation, you’ve been invited to present it to a room full of people who have the power and influence to help make it happen.

Naturally, you’ve spent your time refining the story. You’ve thought about the opening, the supporting data, the examples, and the emotional connection that will help people understand why this idea matters. But there is another part of the conversation that deserves just as much attention, and it begins as the presentation ends.

What Happens If They Say Yes?

You’ve told the story well. The room is engaged. People are asking thoughtful questions, and you are getting to that magic question: “What support do you need?”

Your response is critical to what happens next, and this is where promising ideas often lose momentum. The audience is interested and genuinely wants to help, but if the next step isn’t clear, the conversation ends with good intentions instead of meaningful progress.

The good news is that this part of the conversation can be planned just as thoughtfully as the presentation itself.

Think Beyond the Pitch

Before you ever walk into the room, take time to identify the few things that must happen for your idea to move forward. Resist the temptation to create a long wish list. Instead, focus on the two or three obstacles that, once removed, would unlock meaningful progress.

For each one, ask yourself three questions.

What specifically has to happen next?

Be precise. Whether it’s funding, an executive decision, regulatory approval, technical expertise, or access to the right people or specific expertise, clarity matters.

Who is in the best position to help?

Think beyond roles or departments. Momentum comes from connecting a specific request to the individual who is most likely to influence that outcome.

When is the right opportunity to have the greatest impact?

Timing deserves just as much thought as the request itself. A board meeting, community event, customer advisory council, or quarterly planning session can create a natural opportunity to move an idea forward. Missing that window may mean waiting months for another opportunity.

Taken together, these three questions create a practical roadmap for action. Instead of hoping someone will figure out how to help, you’re making it easy for them to engage in a meaningful way.

Where to Start

The strongest ideas don’t gain traction simply because they’re compelling. They gain traction because someone has already thought through what needs to happen next, who can help make it happen, and when to ask.

That’s the thinking behind our From Ideas to Impact workshop.

In just a few hours, participants work through this framework using one of their own initiatives, leaving with a practical action plan, a clear set of asks, and a roadmap they can begin using immediately.

Because great ideas deserve more than applause. They deserve a plan that helps turn them into reality.
